Promotion of the neighbour’s language
“Why learn the neighbour’s language?” is a project funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Socrates-Lingua 1 programme.
Border regions have many significant assets which can only be capitalized upon by a better knowledge and understanding of the people living in the bordering countries, that is to say, a better knowledge and understanding of their language, their territory, and their surroundings, as well as their way of life, their history and their common market.
Nevertheless, in the “Grande Région” Sar-Lor-Lux+, at the heart of Europe, a decline in the level of learning of the neighbour’s language may be observed, a decline which is sometimes dramatic, notably due to the negative image often attributed to these languages.
Thanks to the tools developed within the framework of the project “Why learn the neighbour’s language?”, they can, from now on, during the course of meetings with their target public (schoolchildren, pupils, parents, students and adults), draw on a precise and well-supported pamphlet and on efficient and easily accessible communication aids (video sequences, exhibitions on the advantages of learning our neighbour’s language, motivational courses).
