Challenges and goals of the European Union - Refuge, migration, development: path towards a coherent policy
The discussion about migration and asylum has shaped European politics since 2015 and presents significant challenges for the Member States of the European Union. In the simulation on European migration policy, participants each take on the role of a head of state or government of an EU Member State or a representative of European institutions. During the one- or multi-day simulation, they engage in a controversial debate on key issues of European asylum and migration policy, representing different political positions.
In a simulated meeting of the European Council, participants examine existing regulations and their limitations, particularly the Dublin system and the unequal impact on different Member States. The aim of the negotiations is to agree on fundamental principles for a European migration pact, addressing issues such as asylum law, the distribution of refugees, legal immigration, and the return of individuals to safe countries of origin.
Objective: To raise awareness of migration and refugee issues and to provide a deeper understanding of decision-making processes, conflicts of interest, and the scope for action within the European Union.
Age: 16 years and older
Duration: one day
