Joseph Daul, Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2014: Young people have a role to play because they are Europe!

By voting in the European elections, first-time voters can influence how the future is going to look like and support the hopes and dreams of young people across Europe. The idea of Europe is something that we create together over time. By voting, we can keep this idea alive. If you want your voice to find an echo in the European Parliament, you must perform this democratic act.

Interviewed by Blanche and Karla, a French-German duo (from CERS), Joseph Daul reminds both the younger and older generations, with his usual outspokenness, that voting strengthens the common democratic experience, a sense of belonging, and a common destiny with other Europeans. The European elections offer a great opportunity for the people of Europe to manifest themselves, as a whole - as one entity. The European Parliament is the only community institution that represents citizens. Moreover, a large part of national legislation originates from European legislation, and thus from the European Parliament.

Recorded by Info-City at the Europalia space of the Alsace-Moselle Memorial in Schirmeck, Joseph Daul addresses questions that many young people ask, such as "Why go out and vote?" or "What is Europe for?". With his experience as former President of the EPP (European People's Party) and as a Member of the European Parliament, he explains, with specific examples, the importance of the European Union in our daily lives and the particular role of the European Parliament within European institutions. Faced with doubts from citizens who are not sure whether to vote for various reasons - Joseph Daul tries to convince them with clear arguments.

At the end of the interview, he gives his particular vision of the future of Europe.

The interview is now available on YouTube.

The CERS is preparing a pedagogical use of several passages for teachers and multipliers.
