Robert Schuman European Centre - CERS
The Council of Europe in Strasbourg protects the fundamental rights of citizens in its 46 member states, contributing to their safety and dignity. But who can list their rights as laid out in the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter? Who knows about the various conventions in place, covering a range of issues from the prevention of torture to combating human trafficking, protecting children, and fighting violence against women?
The Centre européen Robert Schuman in Scy-Chazelles, France (on behalf of EUNET - European Network for Education and Training) and the Pädagogisches Landesinstitut Rhein- land-Pfalz, Germany are delighted to announce the release of their new documentary film, « The Council of Europe and Me » directed by Katja Stephan and Markus Belde from Zinnober film. The project was carried out under the patronage of Mrs. Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The documentary aims particularly to familiarize young people with the extensive activities of this institution, which « quietly brings European peoples closer together » (as quoted in the film). It provides teachers and educators with an effective tool to raise awareness among their target audiences about the promotion of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.The half-hour documentary is structured around moving personal stories of individuals directly impacted by the protection tools of the Council of Europe and its European Court of Human Rights. These testimonies provide a unique insight into the concrete impact of this institution. Through stories and reports, the educational film addresses the question of how the missions of the Council of Europe affect the lives of young Europeans.
The film, available in English, German, Frensh and Polish, is distributed for free under the Creative Commons 4.0 license. The producers encourage schools and other educational organizations to use it in their programs and share it with partners. A pedagogical support document is available here.
