The museum of Robert Schuman in Scy-Chazelles

Robert Schuman’s House: a journey to the roots of Europe

It was in Scy-Chazelles, on the hillsides of the Metz region, that during a weekend in April 1950, Robert Schuman, then Minister for Foreign Affairs, had the audacity to conceive a “bold act” that would change the course of history. Together with other European statesmen, this great visionary laid the foundations for lasting peace in Europe.

Gain an intimate insight into Robert Schuman’s life by visiting his home, a typical 1950s house in Lorraine. Discover the early days of European integration through the interactive museum exhibition. Admire the architecture of the 12th-century fortified church of Saint-Quentin, a listed historic monument, where the ‘Father of Europe’ is laid to rest.

Throughout the year, a programme of events suitable for all ages and a variety of temporary exhibitions will help you gain a better understanding of Europe, discover different facets of Robert Schuman and enjoy a pleasant visit.

A dynamic venue for European encounters: Europe is born of encounter

True to Robert Schuman’s legacy, the Maison de Robert Schuman is today a vibrant hub for exchange and dialogue between the peoples of Europe. The work of the Centre européen Robert Schuman encourages young people to meet, share experiences and discover Europe.

Throughout the year, the site welcomes school groups, associations and groups of adults and senior citizens to help them discover the history of European integration, the values championed by Robert Schuman and the challenges facing Europe today.

The House is also a meeting place for groups from many European countries and from around the world. Seminars, youth exchanges, study visits and international programmes offer participants of different nationalities the opportunity to meet, share their experiences and develop joint projects.

By fostering intercultural dialogue and European citizenship, the Maison de Robert Schuman carries on the vision of its illustrious owner: a Europe built, above all, through encounters between men and women.

Robert Schuman’s House: a site owned by the Moselle Departmental Council and listed as European Cultural Heritage

Owned by the Moselle Departmental Council following Robert Schuman’s death, the site was managed until 2000 by volunteers from the Robert Schuman Association – Maison de l’Europe de Scy-Chazelles. Since then, the Maison de Robert Schuman has been a museum run by the Moselle Departmental Council; à this end, it has undergone extensive renovation and extension work funded by the Department of Moselle with the support of the Robert Schuman Foundation (Paris) and the European Union.

The fortified Church of St Quentin, owned by the municipality of Scy-Chazelles, has undergone major renovation with the support of the Robert Schuman Foundation (Paris), the Ministry of Culture, the Moselle Departmental Council and the municipality of Scy-Chazelles.

Jardin des plantes de chez nous: find new inspiration in a garden of yesteryear

Overlooking the Moselle valley, a few kilometres from Metz, the smallest of the ‘Jardins sans limites’ invites you to discover forgotten plants created by some of the greatest horticulturists of the early 20th century. Your stroll will take you from the woodland, which is particularly pleasant on hot days, to the kitchen garden, via the formal garden.

This green space is the setting for the Maison de Robert Schuman, a garden where the ‘Father of Europe’ loved to recharge his batteries. Pick up some great ideas for garden design or plant combinations.
